What is the Tidewater Youth Services Commission? |
| |
The Tidewater Youth Services Commission (formerly Tidewater Regional Group Home Commission) is a public agency the operates community-based programs for youth who are at-risk of coming or have already come to the attention of the juvenile and domestic relations district courts. The Commission created in the mid 1970's by the administrators of seven localities in southeastern Virginia. These localities include the cities of Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Franklin, and the counties of Isle of Wight and Southampton. |

What services are provided by the Tidewater Youth Services Commission? |

The Tidewater Youth Services Commission operates both residential and non-residential programs. All are community-based, family centered, individually focused, and professionally staffed.
The Commission works closely with local court service units, departments of social services, mental health and substance abuse agencies, and the public school system to provide a full complement of services to youth and families.

How are the services of the Tidewater Youth Services Commission funded? |

The programs of the Tidewater Youth Services Commission are funded at a sustenance level by state and local governments. In 2002, state budget cuts to community-based juvenile justice programs resulted in the elimination of several of the Commission's services. Additional programs affected by the budget cuts are now funded in their entirety through the philanthropic efforts of the Tidewater Youth Services Foundation. |

How does the TYS Foundation support the TYS Commission? |

The TYS Foundation secures grant funding to support specific programs; we hold an annual fund raiser, the Santa Claus Shuffle 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk; and we receive donations from individuals, corporations, and civic organizations. |

How can members of the community help the TYS Foundation? |
| |
Corporate and community support is vital to the mission of the TYS Foundation. There are several ways to help:
- You could volunteer your time to tutor. Many of our clients struggle academically and can use the extra help.
- You could visit a group home to share a special skill or talent - or just to be a friend.
- You could invite us to speak at your church or civic group.
- You could check our "wish list" to see if you have any of the items we need.
- You could designate Tidewater Youth Services Foundation as the recipient of your workplace charitable contribution (United Way of South Hampton Roads, Combined Charities Campaign, Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign, Combined Federal Campaign).
- You could contact us about membership on our board of directors and get directly involved in our mission.
- You could participate in our annual fund raiser, the Santa Claus Shuffle 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk.
- You could make a tax-deductible cash contribution to our annual fund.
- You could help ensure that we will be here to help at-risk youth well into the future by making a tax-deductible contribution to our endowment.
